More on the Monroe Arts Council's philosophy:
Art Enhances Life
Theatre, music, dance, painting, sculpture and literature give expression to our joy, sorrow, hope and fear, and reveal the human condition in all its complexity. The arts, in all their many vibrant forms, impart universal understanding among people, cultures, and nations, and therefore enhance quality of life experiences.
Building Community Together Through Art
People from diverse cultural backgrounds are making the Monroe area their home. Monroe’s small-town atmosphere, proximity to Seattle, and surrounding natural beauty, are just some of the area’s many attractive features. Recent and future growth makes the need even greater for enhanced visual, literary and performing arts, as art helps to create community by drawing people together. It is a ripe time in Monroe’s development for expanding the arts including summer picnic concerts in our local parks, commissioning public sculpture and additional art murals, reviving summer garden tours and children’s concerts, and bringing artistic, foreign and other notable films to the local theater.
Instilling Passion for Art
The Monroe Arts Council (MAC) is a non-profit, grassroots corporation founded during Monroe’s Centennial year
by citizens recognizing the importance of the arts in lifelong learning and inspiration. An energetic, imaginative,
and diverse Board of Directors leads this organization. Membership is voluntary and encouraged within the local
community. The MAC’s first project is remarkable: a 130-foot long mural in historic downtown Monroe depicting local
underwater river life and painted by two regional artists. This mural signifies the city’s establishment at the
confluence of two beautiful rivers and features the area’s indigenous salmon – a Pacific Northwest icon.
Both public and private parties are encouraged to invest in this endeavor which will serve to enhance both quality
of life and city aesthetics for years to come. Individuals, families, businesses, and organizations who contribute
at the Sponsorship level or above will be permanently acknowledged on "The River of Life Centennial Mural".
